2006 Super League Grand Final

14 October 2006 · Old Trafford, Manchester

2006 Super League Grand Final result: St Helens def. Hull FC, 26-4, at Old Trafford, Manchester on 14 October 2006.

Sourcing caveat: See the finals-series match report for this fixture for a fuller scoring breakdown, including a note on a corrected summarization error involving a wrongly-attributed try. St Helens' Paul Anderson was corrected from a previously-recorded squad number of 8 to his genuine 17 (Prop) during round 36 of the finals-series lineups backlog (see HANDOVER.md 13az) — a comparison against that round's independently-researched finals-series Grand Final entry, itself sourced directly from Rugby League Project's Grand-Final-specific match page and cross-matched against St Helens' Qualifying Semi-Final appearance, found this file's pre-existing 8 was a data-entry slip; every other player's number in both this file's lineups was already correct and needed no change.

Harry Sunderland Trophy

Paul Wellens (St Helens). Wellens won the Harry Sunderland Trophy — Super League's Grand Final Man of the Match award, not renamed the Rob Burrow Award until 2024 — for his defensive contribution, including two goal-line saves that kept Hull at bay during a sustained second-half raid.

Match context

St Helens beat Hull FC 26-4 at Old Trafford, completing an historic domestic treble for Daniel Anderson's side, who had already won that year's Challenge Cup (beating Huddersfield 42-12 at Twickenham) and the League Leaders' Shield — their fourth Super League Grand Final title, after 1999, 2000 and 2002. Francis Meli opened the scoring for Saints; Hull hit back through Sid Domic to level it, before Leon Pryce scored in the corner late in the first half, with Jamie Lyon adding a difficult touchline conversion to make it 10-4 at the break. Saints pulled away in the second half with tries from Ade Gardner (finishing off a high kick from Sean Long) and Willie Talau, before Keiron Cunningham's late try — described by the club as his 150th St Helens score — put the result beyond doubt. Paul Wellens won the Harry Sunderland Trophy. The win extended St Helens' status as Super League's most successful club, part of a run of Grand Final wins in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2006 before a gap until their next title in 2014.
