Match report
North Queensland dominated this qualifying-week elimination final from the outset, leading 18-0 at halftime and never looking troubled in Townsville. Halfback Michael Morgan was the standout, becoming the first halfback in NRL finals history to score a hat-trick, capping his performance with a match-sealing try in the 76th minute. Veteran fullback Matt Bowen, playing his 250th NRL match, was instrumental in the rout, scoring a try himself, producing a dazzling break through four defenders to set up Brent Tate under the posts, and later slotting a 79th-minute field goal for good measure. Johnathan Thurston controlled the game with the boot, landing four conversions and both penalty goal attempts. Brisbane rallied late through tries to Corey Norman, captain Sam Thaiday and Dale Copley, but it was too little, too late. The match was also the final NRL appearance of Broncos and Queensland great Petero Civoniceva, who retired after a 309-match, 15-season career and 46 Test caps for Australia.
