Match report

South Sydney shut Melbourne out for the entire first half at ANZ Stadium, building a commanding 14-0 lead through tries to Dylan Farrell and Jeff Lima, both converted by Adam Reynolds. Melbourne, chasing a fourth straight finals campaign under Craig Bellamy, fought back after the break through Billy Slater's 55th-minute try, and had a second Slater try controversially disallowed for interference. Souths sealed the result when Greg Inglis created a late try for hooker Issac Luke, before Will Chambers grabbed a consolation try in the 72nd minute. The win sent South Sydney through to a preliminary final and kept alive their push for a first Grand Final appearance since 1971, while Melbourne dropped into the second week of the finals.
