Match report
This elimination final produced one of the finals series' bigger shocks. Canterbury-Bankstown, the previous year's grand finalists and the higher-seeded home team, hosted seventh-placed Newcastle at ANZ Stadium, with the Knights given little chance by most observers. Newcastle trailed 6-12 at halftime but a committed defensive effort, together with tries to Darius Boyd, Jeremy Smith and Akuila Uate, saw Wayne Bennett's side pull away for a 22-6 win, restricting the Bulldogs to a single Sam Perrett try. It was Newcastle's third win over Canterbury-Bankstown that season. The victory extended the Knights' finals run to a preliminary final against Manly the following week — their deepest finals campaign since their 2001 premiership triumph — while eliminating a Bulldogs side many had expected to challenge again for the title.
