Match report
This was the first match of the 2017 NRL Finals Series, pitting the defending premiers Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks against the North Queensland Cowboys, who were missing injured captain Johnathan Thurston and prop Matt Scott. Played before 16,115 fans at Allianz Stadium on 10 September 2017, the Sharks dominated early through a Chad Townsend try and James Maloney's boot to lead 8-0, before a Maloney sin bin for a professional foul let North Queensland claw back before the break. Cronulla surged to 14-6 through Jack Bird's second-half try, but a Jason Taumalolo four-man-beating try and a late Ethan Lowe penalty goal levelled the scores 14-14 and forced extra time. Michael Morgan then slotted a field goal in the additional period to seal a 15-14 golden-point win, eliminating the reigning premiers in straight-sets fashion in the opening week of the finals and sending the Cowboys through to face the Parramatta Eels the following week.
