Match report

South Sydney defeated cross-town rivals Sydney Roosters 30-14 at Allianz Stadium on 11 September 2022, in a match dubbed 'Sin Bin Sunday' for a reported NRL-record seven sin-binnings, as referee Ashley Klein struggled to contain repeated foul play from both sides. Souths led at half-time despite playing extended stretches with only 12 or 11 men on the field, and pulled away in the second half through tries to Jai Arrow and Isaiah Tass. Alex Johnston scored twice, in the 5th and 47th minutes, becoming South Sydney's all-time leading try-scorer during the contest, while Latrell Mitchell was flawless off the tee with five from five conversions. The Roosters, hampered by first-half HIAs to James Tedesco and Angus Crichton, fought back through tries from Crichton, Daniel Tupou and Nat Butcher but could not match Souths' discipline and polish. The result eliminated the Roosters from the 2022 finals series and sent South Sydney through to Week 2.
