Match report

This preliminary final was a rematch of the 2018 NRL Grand Final, played at the Sydney Cricket Ground with the winner to face Canberra in the 2019 Grand Final. The match ignited in its opening seconds when Storm prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Roosters forward Siosiua Taukeiaho were both sin-binned for fighting just 20 seconds after kick-off. Sydney controlled the contest from there, leading 8-0 at halftime, before Boyd Cordner and James Tedesco crossed for tries either side of the break, with Latrell Mitchell adding three conversions. Melbourne's only response came through a Nelson Asofa-Solomona try converted by veteran captain Cameron Smith. The Roosters' win denied Melbourne, the season's minor premiers, a shot at back-to-back premierships and sent Sydney into the Grand Final against Canberra chasing what would become the franchise's second consecutive title.
