Match report
Brisbane Broncos ended a 14-game losing streak against Melbourne Storm with a commanding 26-0 qualifying final win at Suncorp Stadium on 8 September 2023, booking a home preliminary final and a week's rest. Melbourne, missing composure in attack, was undone by early errors from a disjointed spine; coach Craig Bellamy later said his halves "didn't have any connection tonight at all." Kotoni Staggs opened the scoring after breaking through four defenders, and Adam Reynolds's conversion plus a 38th-minute penalty goal took Brisbane to an 8-0 halftime lead. The Broncos pulled away after the break: fullback Reece Walsh showed dazzling footwork to step past his opposite number and score, before setting up Jordan Riki through a gap just three minutes later to make it 20-0. Selwyn Cobbo added a fourth try late, converted by Reynolds, to complete the shutout. The contest was overshadowed by a serious injury to Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, taken from the field on a medicab in the closing stages.
