Match report
Penrith Panthers defeated Canterbury-Bankstown 28-12 in an all-Sydney Elimination Final at Allianz Stadium on 11 September 2016, ending the Bulldogs' finals campaign and sending the Panthers into a semi-final against Canberra. Seeded sixth, Penrith trailed at halftime after Moses Mbye's try was partly offset by a Dallin Watene-Zelezniak try, but overwhelmed the seventh-placed Bulldogs with an unanswered second-half scoring blitz — tries to Waqa Blake, Peter Wallace, Tyrone Peachey and Josh Mansour, with Nathan Cleary adding the extras. Sam Perrett's 79th-minute try was Canterbury's only response. The Bulldogs, coached by Des Hasler, were hit by a heavy injury toll during the match, losing Brett Morris, Josh Reynolds and Michael Lichaa, which undermined their ability to sustain pressure. Penrith captain Matt Moylan was widely praised in post-match media coverage for his playmaking in steering the comeback, in what was the club's first finals campaign since 2014.
